About Curt McLey

I live in Omaha, Nebraska with my wife Deb, son Eric, and mother-in-law, who is in the mid to late stages of vascular dementia. Much of my family’s life is devoted to caring for my mother-in-law, a lady that has been helpful and kind to us through the years. I have been a partner in an executive search firm since 1987. Prior to that, I had a career in radio broadcasting. In college, I volunteered at KCFS, an early CCM station owned by Sioux Falls College in Sioux Falls, SD. Then, I worked commercial radio including CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio), PA (Pop Adult), AOR (Album Oriented Rock), Country, News/Talk, and MOR (Middle of the Road) formats.

My greatest claim to fame in radio was hosting a show that became the highest rated evening program in the U.S.A. for the country format, based on average quarter hour shares. Besides easy humor and country music, the show featured Date-Connection, an on-air precusor to the on-line dating services so popular today. Nearly fifty couples became married after being interviewed and meeting their soul mate on the air during the show. I was interviewed and profiled on local and national radio and TV programs and publications, including Women’s World Magazine.

I love to read and write. I read everything I can get my hands on, and write Christian music reviews for The Phantom Tollbooth. My family is everything to me. I’m passionate about movies and music, especially those of the indie variety. I love to travel and explore. I love watching and participating in all sports, especially college basketball and Nebraska football. I play acoustic guitar, write songs, and have a lot of fun playing and singing, but only within my own family unit. Most surprising fun fact? I am a professional level blackjack player and own over 100 books on the topic. Though I’m currently a poor example of health and fitness, when I’m behaving, I really enjoy working out and eating properly. In the last five years, I’ve become fascinated with cooking and think allrecipes.com is one of the greatest websites known to man. In around three years of registration, I have prepared over 200 different recipes for my family. I’m addicted to The Food Network.

I’m involved in this Square Pegs project because I believe passionately that the music of these wonderful artists needs to be heard. I was introduced to the music of Andrew Peterson after learning that Caedmon’s Call members endorsed his music. I was blown away by the deep poetic sensibility of Andy’s writing. From there, I’ve slowly been introduced to the other Square Pegs and their music, lending a helping hand where appropriate–but mostly, just being awed by the amazing quality of the music these folks turn out. I’m deeply honored to help these artists in whatever small way that might be.

Wow!!!! Curt — I can’t believe I didn’t think of looking you up before. About 3 months ago(around the beg of March?) I had a very realistic dream that you were in and when I woke - I had this incredible feeling that I needed to pray for you - continuously — all day!!! I did and I shared the experience that night with my women’s small group bible study and we all prayed for you, too! I just hope that what ever was coming your way that day that the prayers were a hedge of protection around you!

We’ve both come a long way since high school and Camp Merrill - I’m sure not all of it easy (at least on this side). I look back at those years as some of the best years of my life! I now live near Cleveland/Akron, OH and work for Charles Schwab in the Retirement Plan Services division and have been in the Employee Benefit Retirement industry since 1984.

Would love to hear back from you - it sounds like you have a nice life!

    Take Care, C.

    Curt,
I came across your name in this site and wanted to say hello. I’m sorry I didn’t respond to your e-mail several years ago. I still have your email adress somewhere but have never took time to get in touch. I guess I’m just lazy. I remember great times at Camp Merrill and good friendships. Life was simplier back then. I would love to meet you in Omaha for dinner some evening and catch up on what you have been up to.

Hope to here back from you- Todd

Todd! Wow, it’s great to hear from you again, man. It’s a bit bizarre how this website has become the unofficial gathering point of Camp Moses Merrill alumni. Ha. Indeed, life was far less complex in those days. Like all of us, I have changed some, but probably not enough. As I approach 50 years old, in many ways, I still feel like a kid. It would be great to hook up with you one of these days. I might even be able to have our ol’ buddy Ron Nelson come down from Sioux Falls for that one. He’d love to chat with you too. I’ll send you an e-mail, Todd. Great to hear from you.

Cindy, I owe you a follow up e-mail too. Be looking for it. So many great memories of crossing the great state of Nebraska in N.B.Y.F. By the way Cindy, you were a music major, yes? If you haven’t checked out the music of The Square Pegs, don’t hesitate. I don’t want to sound like a shill but they are awesome.
