A (short) Randall Goodgame update

Bits of news you can use from Randall Goodgame:

  • Slugs, Bugs, and Lullabies (the kids record he co-wrote with Andrew Peterson) could be out as early as next month. Parents: take note. I’m thinking this one goes in my daughter’s Christmas stocking this year.
  • Randall is currently busily writing for the next Caedmon’s Call record. Andy O says this will be happening sooner rather than later, so I imagine the creative juices are flowing freely.
  • And finally, “no official word on a solo project yet, but I’ve got some ideas.” Those of us who loved War and Peace will just have to wait a little bit longer.

Sandra and Derek in Paste Magazine #25

Sandra McCracken’s latest album, Gravity|Love, receives a positive four-star review in the latest issue (#25) of Paste Magazine. The review states “…she’s capable of creating Americana to rival recent outings from Tom Petty or The Jayhawks…” Her song “Long Way Home” is also featured in the included sampler CD alongside artists such as Mindy Smith and The Decemberists.

Her husband, Mr. McCracken, also known as Derek Webb, also has an insert in the latest issue detailing the free release of his latest album, Mockingbird

An Avalanche of Folk Music You Can Dance to from Jeremy

Bryan told us a few weeks back about Jeremy’s new studio blog, but we haven’t revisited it since then, which is a shame. So, if you haven’t been keeping up with our man Casella—shame on you!—let’s bring you up to speed a little:

I’ve been working on a new song these past couple days called “Daylight”….it moves pretty fast at 120 bpm with some beats I programmed in Reason that have a touch of electronica in them. I’ve been camping out on the arrangement marrying orchestral sounds, 12 string acoustic guitar and the electronica stuff….

I love fast rhythms that still retain a sense of space…so it feels just busy enough but not overdoing anything. Leave room for the beauty.

If I can get 3-4 songs on this record that move between 120-135 bpms then I’ll be a happy man.

Fast beat … strings … 12-string acoustic … electronica. This isn’t going to sound like any Casella record we’ve heard before.

I’ve been writing on piano all week and it continues to open all sorts of doors I never knew existed. A lot of melodic and musical interludes that I would never hear or write on guitar have been introducing themselves to me on our old 1935 Kimball upright.

I’ve never had this much fun on any of my records!!!!!!!

It is always great to see an artist take a bunch of bold steps in putting together an album. Who wants to hear the same stuff all the time?

Jeremy, I really look forward to hearing this one, brother. :)

Square Peg Bootleggy Goodness

Okay, folks; in case you’ve somehow missed it, we’ll give you the info: after whetting your appetite with news of three Square Peg shows in August, we’ve followed through with our promise to record them all and present them to you:

  1. 15 Aug 2006 setlist and download link and my photos from that night. If you took any shots that night and have uploaded them to Flickr, please tag them with “upcoming:event=97069” so we can all see them!
  2. 22 Aug 2006 setlist and download link and my photos from that night. If you took any shots that night and have uploaded them to Flickr, please tag them with “upcoming:event=97070” so we can all see them!
  3. 29 Aug 2006 setlist and download link and my photos from that night. If you took any shots that night and have uploaded them to Flickr, please tag them with “upcoming:event=97071” so we can all see them!

Thanks go out to Stephen Lamb for his help in securing a spot for recording these shows.

[Yes, I know ... we have a mailing list for show release announcements. I'm just buttressing the effort.]

Lastly, let me note something that you may not know: I don’t live in Nashville. I live two hours away. I make as many shows as I can, but that number is never as many as I would like. I know that you’d all like to have as many shows taped as possible—and so would I!—but it’s just not feasible for me to do it, especially the costs for me to do so. I’m not crying poverty or anything like that; I’m merely asking for understanding. And if you want to know what shows I am and am not attending, Upcoming.org will tell you. [Stalker. ;)]

Can’t Make Nashville Mid-Week? Try Knoxville!

I know that everyone can’t always be driving to Nashville on Tuesday nights—Nashville may not be nearby, and heck, mid-week trips are hard. [Trust me, I know.] This may have you bummed about not making the Gravity|Love release show in Nashville on Tuesday, but if that’s your problem, how about hitting Knoxville on Friday? Convenient to three interstate corridors, a beautiful city [okay, so I'm biased as it's my birthplace], and a great venue in New City.

The lineup will be the same for these shows [and tonight's in Columbia]:

  • The lovely Mrs. McCracken
  • The affable Mr. McCracken on electric and 12-string acoustic
  • The road warrior bass man, Mark Polack
  • Mr. “Congas in My Monitors” Garett Buell

So, if you can’t make Nashville on Tuesday, hit up Knoxville tomorrow. You’ll have a blast either way!

Pegs on Pegs

Christianity Today’s Jackie A. Chapman interviewed three of our beloved Pegs: Jill, AP, and the Toesenga. It’s worth reading, especially in knowing how the Pegs view this all:

Do you have a more restored faith in music being outside the label world?

Phillips: I don’t like feeling negative. I think people try to stir that up in us sometimes, “Oh, the evil labels.” I don’t think we feel that way. We feel like, “Wow, that was a part of our history.”

Peterson: That was a good part of my history.

Phillips: Nobody would have listened to my independent record if I hadn’t been with a label [before that]. It gave me some credibility. I don’t know if that credibility means anything, but if it means they’ll listen to my music, then great! Honestly, I’m in a place where I’m very thankful to experience the little success that I did. God knew that I needed that experience for my character, for my humility. If I had some big record out of the gate, I would probably be writing different songs and be a different person.

Even the name Square Peg implies that we’re not trying to go that route as signed artists anymore. We’re trying to do something different. If we don’t fit there, we’re not going to beat our heads against the wall. Now, we didn’t want it to sound angry because most of us are past that place. We’ve been through that phase and we don’t felt that way now. We just feel very thankful to be doing what we’re doing.

Osenga: I have a restored faith in the audience, and in the artists I tend to work with. The business is really screwy and I work really, really hard to stay afloat in it, even now. But playing shows with Matthew Jones or Andrew Peterson is so unlike a marketing meeting back at EMI. There’s just no comparison to the freedom I feel now, in playing the music I always wanted to play [as a singer/songwriter].

Peterson: Many times artists can think themselves to be more important than they are, saying, “Because God has given me the gift to write songs, my songs must change the world. God needs my songs.” Which is just ridiculous. God is ultimately not interested in our songs. He doesn’t care about my career; he cares about my heart. And if that means shattering my career in order to bring me closer to him, then he’ll do that.

In thinking about that struggle with “success,” I make a very middle class income, and I have friends that make way more than that. There are times that Satan has worked on me, trying to make me feel like I’m not as successful. Maybe I’m not successful because God knows I’d be the biggest jerk in the world. Maybe he knows that if I had a No. 1 song or was a big star that I’d be really selfish with it. What we see as a curse is actually mercy. Now I try to rest in the awe that God will make a way while I’m working away.

I’ll admit that the Pegs probably have a healthier opinion about what they’re trying to do than I do about it at times, because I can sometimes shortsightedly see the SPA as a path to world [or at least "Christian music"] domination, when it’s really just a group of friends who like each others music and want to point to what everyone is doing.

The whole interview is worth a read [and not just because Jill gives us some love ... but Jill, dear, thanks for the love.]

[Hat tip to Stephen Lamb for letting us know about this.]
